First it is technically flawed, with poor focus. Second, I generally don’t want to poke fun at the people I shoot. It seems a breach of trust. Normally when I arrive in a city for a business trip after 10pm I think of nothing but bed, and maybe late night room service if I missed dinner. But this was Las Vegas and I did not have to be anywhere in the early morning so I grabbed my x100 and headed...  I just returned from a brief trip (1.5 days, 2 nights) to Las Vegas for business. For a variety of reasons, Vegas is not my thing, but I was glad to have the occasion and opportunity to visit at least this once. I knew there were slot machines in the airport, but was surprised to...  Yesterday there was another Google Plus New York Photowal, this time in Chinatown. In addition to the usual crew of local Google Plus photographers, about 60 or so I’d estimate, I was joined by Bob Lussier and his lovely wife Jean. They reside in Massachusetts, but were in town for a wedding this...  As much as I love Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2 for black and white adjustments, I also keep trying to learn how to make black and white adjustments in Aperture or Photoshop. I find it tends to get better results on shots featuring people. One of the counterintuitive but powerful tricks is to adjust colors...  Do you find the pair of elbows distracting? They don’t bother me. It seems clear where the focus is, but I’d be interested to know if others disagree. Tweet  It has rained for 3-4 straight days and was pouring early yesterday morning. Suddenly around mid-morning the skies cleared and the sun shone. Rockefeller Center was packed. I’m sure everyone who is here on vacation this week was excited to have a nice day, and the lines for tickets to Top of the Rock were...  The backwards writing on the side of the truck was a small puzzle. Why would the numbers — and a series of vertical letters — be written backwards? Then I actually read them and it immediately became apparent: “15′ 1″ HIGH.” It’s the truck’s clearance, written so the driver or his partner can read it on the...  It’s not often that people sit in a car with the dome light on, so I grabbed this opportunity to get a shot of this family waiting for someone or something both inside and out of their Mini. Because of the proximity, the way they were facing, and with the father looking every which way, I had...  I was across the street and saw the scooter speeding down the road and set up to get a panning shot as it drove by, but then it stopped quickly when the light changed to red. Disappointed, I put the camera down, and noticed a pretty young woman, well put together with the dress, jacket,...  I have been negligent in posting images from this project of Hipstamatic subway candids. The last time I did so, I posted a few dozen images from an entire season (Summer 2010). I’m dropping the images per post to five, both to allow me to be more selective and to keep images from being lost...  When I started to taker this shot, the father was looking down at his smart phone, so I had two pairs of people. The father and son engrossed in their handheld devices, and the two photographers taking their identical shots. Just as I clicked the father looked up, and seemed to focus on the other...  |
