Winter White and Black

I feel almost as if I just channelled Jim Denham: some snow, a fence, a bleak winter landscape, and a black and white treatment. It’s actually quite a beautiful scene. Friday night the NYC area got just enough snow to make everything pretty without really getting in the way. Perhaps my favorite element of this image is it’s surprising location — this is Brooklyn, specifically the Jamaica Bay Riding Academy just off the Belt Parkway situated on the Mill Basin of Jamaica Bay. Beyond the tree line is basically a bit of beach and then the water.  The Academy flooded during Sandy but rebounded quickly, opening the very next weekend for lessons using power from their own generator. They’re somewhat hard to spot, but there were a couple of horses out that morning and visible in the image.

  1. Yep, my kind of place! Love the lines, the great shadows and the landscape! Would not have related this to Brooklyn had you not said so! Very cool!.

  2. Wonderful winter scene. I love the shadows cast by the fence.
