I know that this tilt-shift miniature effect has been done to death, but I have found surprisingly few opportunities to create the classic example of a street scene shot from above, and then rendered in such a way to make it look like a miniature diorama. After I shot this image from the Fresh Pond Road elevated subway station and looked at it on my computer, I realized it was a perfct candidate for the effect, using Onone Software’s Focal Point. I think the guy walking in the middle of the road is the perfect, um, focal point. With the black and white conversion it also triggers a very specific old cultural reference, which I won’t mention because I’d rather let you make your own associations.

3 May 2012Definitely a success, Mark. I always think these current “tilt-shift” shots look like miniatures. The last time I used that effect was with a 4×5 view camera, buildings straight and focus sharp. 🙂

3 May 2012Very nice overall effect, Mark. I would have considered keeping the building in the left foreground in focus, though. If you look at the diagonal shadow on the street, between the white car and the bus, that seems to be the logical delineation where a miniature model would transition to a painted diorama. Irregardless it’s a terrific image, you really can conjure up a lot of story telling viewing the image.
