This is a detail from an apartment building in Western Queens called CityLights at Queens Landing. It was taken in July 2009 from Gantry State Park, which is across the street. I’m not sure what the purpose of the rope lines are. I thought they might have been decorative, but they do not appear to be permanent, so I suppose they had some temporary maintenance purpose, but they make up, I think, the most interesting aspect of the image.

9 Apr 2011The combination of the rope lines and the lines on the building combine to make for some interesting patterns. The other interesting element is what appears to be a small doll hanging in one of the balconies in the top left portion of the shot.

18 Apr 2011I love the black and white treatment and the lines, but what really grabs me is that you went with a vertical frame on this one. Most people, myself included, would not have. I don’t think I would have come up with half as interesting image. Great job.

19 Apr 2011Thanks Scott. I find that very interesting as the vertical frame seemed so obvious to me. I would not have even thought it worth mentioning. I wanted to convey the sense of an infinite pattern, with ropes and lines that had no beginning or end. A horizontal crop would have either shown beyond the edges of the building, or shown a very small section without conveying the pattern. I find it interesting myself how sometimes these concepts come so clearly to us, and other times we don’t see it until somebody else does it. I have definitely been on the other end of the feeling you described.
