E-PL1 Night HDR – Plaza Outside MOCA (Bunker Hill, Los Angeles)

If this image and post title look familiar to long term visitors of this site, it is because they both recall this post. This is a pool/fountain on a plaza behind the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). I had occasion to return to Los Angeles for another business trip this week, and this time had much less time for photography. Nevertheless, I managed to put together a very handy travel photography kit that can even handle night time HDR. I simply put my Olympus E-PL1 (a micro 4/3s camera) on a Gorillapod. The E-PL1 only brackets three shots 0 and +/-1 EV, but you can also set the EV on the camera to start at any point up to plus or minus 3 EV. So, if you take 3 brackets centered around -3, 0, and +3, you end up with nine shots covering every whole number from -4 to +4. That is enough for almost every situation. While it sometimes happens, it is rare that you will ever need more than 9 brackets for most HDR shots.

Once I merged the exposures into the tonemapped image, the biggest editing I did was color correction and a white balance fix.

  1. Great stuff, Mark. I love the vibrance of this.

  2. I thought I felt a disturbance in the “force” this last week as an airliner trudged its way down Imperial Blvd and by my location about 35 mi. East of LAX. Must have been you. Butch

  3. Beautiful shot, Mark. My daughter, Caroline, agrees.

  4. I love the electric blue sky. The wind gods granted you a perfectly still reflection. You must have a connection somewhere 🙂 Just gorgeous.
