Thirteenth and Bridge Graffiti Wall

This appears to be authorized graffiti art on a building at the corner of Thirteenth Street and Queens Plaza South. The curving overpass is for an exit ramp off the Queensboro Bridge, which has a complicates set of access and exit points on the Queens side. I kept the processing pretty clean and simple, although...

Behind the Glow

These windows are in an industrial manufacturing/warehouse building in the Long Island City/Hunters Point section of Western Queens.  It was taken around 8 am on a Sunday morning, in full light, so the glow is completely fabricated in post, although I do believe the lights were on inside. I think it has been a while...

This Ain’t Blockbuster

This DVD store has no name and no windows, but it was open for business at 6:20 am on a Sunday. I don’t think I need to say what types of DVDs it offers, which will just end up generating lots of irrelevant traffic to my site. There used to be lots more shops like...

Bus Stop No. 97

This is a scan from film, taken with my used Minolta CLE and a Leica lens, and it highlights some of the limitations of using film. Taken in either late December or early January, I was able to get these great long shadows in the middle of the day, but of course that meant that...

Bus Stop No. 96

Yo, people — the bus comes THIS way. TEMPORARY NOTICE: The site that hosts my images  suffered an outage this morning, I’ll leave this notice up the rest of the days in case it recurs. Tweet

Distortions – [Organika Restaurant]

I think this is why I bought a tilt-shift lens, and do not simply try to do all my tilting effects using onOne Software’s FocalPoint 2 Now software. I don’t think I ever would have chosen to create this effect using the software, as great as it is.     This restaurant is fairly new,...

You have to play the music for the full effect, and to discover what this reminded me of. Technical note: the embedded music player works for me when I view the post directly, but not when I view the post on the home page. Please let me know if you have problems. Tweet

Five Bicycles

I will confess that I only noticed the three physical, real bicycles when I took the shot.  I did not notice the symbols until I started working on this image early this morning. This happens a lot, that I only become aware of thematic elements in a shot I took when I process days, weeks,...

Betel

Black and white HDR image of the restaurant Betel, which specializes in southeast Asian fare, at 51 Grove Street in the West Village.  It feels like I haven’t processed something like this, with the detail all punched up, for a while. Tweet

Bus Stop No. 94

I want to  thank everyone who responded to my request for site design feedback on yesterday’s post, both in the comments and on Twitter. I’m not going to do anything immediately with the site, and I might just leave it as it is, but I have already made a change to the view you get...

The Path Within

I did not even notice the KISS graffiti until I started processing the image. I’m feeling somewhat contrary today so I’m not going to offer my usual explanation of what this is, although people located in New York or New Jersey will probably figure it out. I had never seen this particular location before, and...

Paradox: 48 Laws of Power

Now you know how many laws of power there are. This is the first image I shot during Saturday’s photo outing with Jesse Pafundi and Scott Wyden Kivowitz.  As I mentioned yesterday, we were creatively lost and could find nothing to shoot. While retracing our steps, we walked past an entrance for buses into the Port Authority...

Sv. Nikola Tavelic Croatian Church Door Panels

You might see some other looks at this church from Jesse Pafundi and Scott Wyden Kivowitz.  We were out shooting yesterday after meeting Dave Wilson, who was in town from Austin for work. Dave’s duties precluded him from joining us on a shoot afterwards, but he shouldn’t feel too disappointed. Jesse, Scott and I spent...

Bus Stop No. 93

There’s a guy partially visible here in the background here — you can’t see his face — but he is in two other shots in the bus stop series, all taken on the same late spring evening last June. Tweet
