This is New York City’s former police headquarters, replaced in the early 70s by One Police Plaza, a rather drab ugly structure. Please note, however, that if you read The Alienist, and enjoyed the fictional account of Teddy Roosevelt’s time as Commissioner of New York City’s police department, that headquarters is the one prior to the one pictured here.
This building now houses luxury condominiums, which is probably the best use for it, as it has the money to maintain its beauty, even though few people now get to see the inside. It is in an offbeat location, at the crossways of SoHo, Chinatown and Little Italy, near basically no other buildings that match its grandeur, and sitting on an oddly shaped cramped block that makes it hard to take in the whole building at once, no matter where you stand. As a result, it is to some degree an under appreciated treasure. Those who do know it generally refer to it affectionately by the bland title to this post: the Old Police Building. It does not require any more ornamentation.
