I think Park Avenue photographs so much better than it looks in real life. The gleaming glass office towers tend to look pretty drab, especially in full daylight. I discussed this earlier here. This is, I think, what the architects were aiming at when they developed this style. So even though I do not much like the style in real life, I am drawn to come back here again and again for photographs.
Of course it helps to take the image right around dawn. This was my first photo excursion with the Nikon 24mm PC-E tilt-shift lens. I made myself use it without engaging either the tilt or shift functions for the first half-hour or so. I wanted to get to know the lens, and I knew that once I started I would become a tilt-shift fool. More evidence of that later.

11 Oct 2010Tilt-shift your fanny off. We will expect to see all manner of improbably focus gradients and straightened (or futher tilted) lines. Now, what you REALLY need is a big black “focus cloth” hanging back over your head. Instead of black, you might get “urban cammo” so you can avoid the photographer gestapo and keep things completely candid. 🙂

In addition to great light, early Sunday morning shooting in Manhattan offers 2 other advantages that make it worth getting up early – (1) mostly deserted streets, so you can get shots like this with nobody around, and (2) easily available and free street parking, which is mostly impossible to find the other 6.75 days of the week.
