Beware the Headless Hipster

Partially exposed graffiti on a wall in hipster central – Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  With part of the subject’s head missing, it is almost the closest thing I have to a Halloween image. I actually had some other images lined up for today and for the lead up to Halloween, but chose not to use them.  Several...

My Attempt at the Scott Wyden “Boston Bad Brackets”

Yesterday Scott Wyden, who I met through Twitter, posted a challenge to his photographer friends to do their best with what he admitted to be a bad set of brackets.  You can read why they are bad brackets at the link.  So I gave it a go last night.  I did the HDR in Photomatix, then...

Stupid Banner

With apologies for the title, but sometimes you want to mix old and new.  Other times you want just to feature a nice row of older buildings, and any illusion is broken by a silly mod banner for restaurant week, and really, does anybody who was planning on eating at home change their plans because...

Hello Again, Kitty

Yes it is the Lever House, again, and the Hello Kitty statute I previously featured is still there.  Yesterday’s post surprised a few people, according to the comments.  Until they read the text, they presumed that the bokeh was created using a tilt-shift lens.  In fact, it was created with a Nikon 135mm f2.0 prime...

Yes We Can!

If you think the title is a reference to President Obama’s 2008 campaign slogan, then you probably have not had young children in the last 10-15 years, because this piece of construction equipment, with its small size and rich color, definitely reminded me of Bob the Builder and his friends.  Even the way its lid...

Film and Pseudo-Film

Lately I have been thinking a lot about film photography.  I recently posted some images taken with a Diana F+ plastic lens camera and 120 roll film.  Yesterday I bought new batteries for some old film cameras and a bunch of rolls of fresh film.  I shot half of a roll yesterday, and of course...

The Face Between. I thought I knew who was the subject of this photo until I cropped it.   It turned out to be someone I had overlooked, and a so-so photo suddenly became very interesting to me. Tweet

My First Blogiversary

So I started this blog one year ago today, and it seems appropriate to do a little retrospective.  It began cautiously.  I had been thinking of getting serious about photography on and off for a few years. In the summer of 2009 I actually started doing it.  I began playing with HDR.  I bought Photoshop...

Infra-Blue?

Over the summer I processed a few images using a false infrared filter applied in post.  Both Nik’s Silver Efex and Color Efex have such filters.  I liked the results, but wanted to try real infrared.  The best solution is film, theoretically, but it has major impediments these days.  Some of the best infrared films...

Cool Rocks With City Background

Yesterday morning I went down to Brooklyn Bridge Park with my friend Jon, who needs to get back to taking more pictures regularly.  The city recently opened a large new section of the park between Piers 1 and 6.  Because this area has only been open about a month and a half, we had a chance...

Diana F+ – A First Look

Last week I bought a Diana F+ camera from the Lomography store.  It’s a cheaply made (but not inexpensively priced) plastic camera that shoots 120 Medium Format Film.  I immediately shot 2 rolls as a test, and this is from that set. So here are my initial thoughts.  The camera is surprisingly hard to use...
