Grant’s Tomb

Late afternoon shot of Grant’s Tomb on Morningside Heights, Manhattan, resting place of Ulysses S. Grant, Civil War General for the Union (North) and later President of the United States.  The site is the subject of an old, old joke whose punchline is “who’s buried in Grant’s Tomb?”, with the joke being that the question should provide its own answer.  The joke is part of American lore and almost nobody remembers the rest of the joke or its original context.  The further twist is that technically, nobody is buried there, but Grant and his wife are entombed there above ground.
